Ashely Calvin grew up in a small town in Michigan. “Either you’re related to everyone or you know everyone,” she laughed. Afterwards she moved to North Carolina and attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “I thought pharmacists just count pills but once I learned about what the profession does I got really excited about it. I made sure I took the right classes and worked as a pharmacy tech.”

She was especially interested in pharmacogenetics. “My mom has eleven siblings and my dad has nine; my mom’s siblings look nothing alike, while my dad’s all look alike.” In addition, Calvin noted that her mother has O negative blood, while her two children have O positive. “It just got me interested in genetics.”

Calvin’s mother works for an airline and in her travels met several Touro graduates. “They said good things about Touro and I did my own research,” said Calvin. She also likes the diversity New York city offers.

She hopes to specialize in research. “I love research and I love being in a lab; analyzing things and figuring out why things happen.”

Family Genetics: Calvin is six-feet tall and she is the shortest member of her family. People are always surprised to find out that she doesn’t play basketball. She is much more interested in theater and reading about Greek myths.
