Bronx-born Kayla Broomfield grew up visiting her mother while she worked, at Montefiore Medical Center. “I saw how the hospital pharmacists worked and it made me want to be a pharmacist,” recalled Broomfield. In Lehman College, Broomfield had a triple major: anthropology, biology and chemistry. “I wanted to be well-rounded and knew that, aside from all the technical knowledge, pharmacists need to understand other people’s culture,” Broomfield explained.

Broomfield said TCOP’s mission was a factor in her choice of pharmacy school. “Since I was exposed to the medical field at a young age, it was inevitable that I would hear about TCOP and their commitment to serving the underserved. That’s the most important thing for me: giving back to the community. I grew up in an underserved community and it’s important for me to not forget where I came from.”

She intends to become a hospital pharmacist: “I see pharmacists on rounds with other healthcare professionals and that’s where I want to be,” Broomfield said.

Broomfield maintains a busy schedule working overnight shifts at Montefiore as a pharmacy specialist, attending TCOP and raising her seven-year-old daughter. But she has no complaints. “This is a lifelong dream for me and I can’t make any excuses,” she said.

Not Identical: Broomfield is a twin. Though unlike her brother, she’s a self-described goofball who enjoys amusement parks.
