Clinical Conundrums: Differentiating Monkeypox from Similarly Presenting Infections
Azhar Hussain, Jasndeep Kaler, and Dr. Tyler Maxwell
Azhar Hussain, along with co-authors Jasndeep Kaler and TCOP's Dr. Tyler Maxwell, presented a study on differential diagnoses of monkeypox. They analyzed the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and modes of transmission of the monkeypox virus to distinguish critical differences between monkeypox and similar presenting illnesses. The study determined that the characteristic maculopapular rash seen in monkeypox is preceded by a flu-like illness. The maculopapular rash that develops is very similar to the dermatological profile of other pathogens such as varicella zoster, syphilis, and smallpox. Ensuring a correct diagnosis is crucial to provide appropriate treatment and allows contact tracing of cases to deter the transmissibility of such infectious diseases.
"I am humbled to have represented Touro College of Pharmacy at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting 2022. It was an inspiring experience that allowed me to network with and learn from experts in the field. I look forward to attending the conference in the upcoming years and am excited about what the future holds!" - Azhar Hussain
