Simone Barnes, along with co-authors Abdul Jalloh and Ugonna Ogbenta, presented a study that evaluates the effectiveness of the GIP/GLP-1 drug in comparison to GLP-1 medications in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The study involved patients with both controlled and uncontrolled T2DM. Ultimately, the study showed that compared to GLP-1 receptor agonist agents, the dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist agent tirzepatide was proven more effective in reducing the glycated hemoglobin level. Tirzepatide also had superior cardiovascular and renal benefits.

“The health conditions that comprise metabolic syndrome (high blood sugar, hypertension, obesity, high triglycerides, insulin resistance) and Type II Diabetes, have long interested me. Unlike many other disease states that have an infectious or genetic origin, one could argue that the conditions that lead to insulin resistance and diabetes are largely preventable and treatable through education and lifestyle modifications. Still, metabolic syndrome develops disproportionately in those who come from under-resourced socioeconomic backgrounds in many countries, leading to other health risks (stroke, heart disease, etc), shorter lifespans, and preventable mortalities. We were excited to explore and discuss one of the newer pharmacological agents in managing Type 2 Diabetes and look forward to future findings on this and other medications that can aid clinicians as tools for managing and treating Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome as a whole.”  - Abdul Jalloh

“After attending my first ASHP Midyear, I felt even more motivated and proud to be a part of this profession. As a P3 student, Midyear provided the chance to gain insights and observe the interviewing process, while networking with pharmacists in the roles I aspire to be in one day. This experience highlighted the tools required and which Touro College of Pharmacy has provided, to ensure success in my career as a pharmacist. It was a grand experience uniting with many students and pharmacists walking different paths in pharmacy, and one thing for certain is ‘Pharmacy is Better Together.’”  - Ugonna Ogbenta
