D.O. and Pharmacy Students Volunteer at Harlem Healthy Soul Festival

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine and Touro College of Pharmacy Students Perform Blood-Pressure Screenings and Medication Reviews for Harlem Residents

September 24, 2015

This past Saturday, Pharmacists for Public Health (PPH) at the Touro College of Pharmacy (TCOP) teamed up with the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM)-Harlem to perform blood-pressure screenings and brown-bag medication reviews at the third annual Harlem Healthy Soul Festival hosted by the Apollo Theater. The festival, which offered live entertainment, informative exhibits, and presentations by celebrities, doctors and health experts including TouroCOM's own Dr. John M. Palmer and Dr. Jeff Gardere, offered families the opportunity to learn about resources that foster active and healthy lifestyles.

In just four hours, TCOP and TouroCOM students screened and counseled over 120 patients.

Dr. Tipsuda Bahri, chair of the Basic Biomedical Sciences at TouroCOM-Harlem, supervised the D.O. students, while Dr. Rebecca Cope, PharmD, supervised the pharmacy students. Kirolous Makarious, P2 and President of Pharmacists for Public Health (PPH), led the recruitment of pharmacy student volunteers.

The pharmacy and D.O. students worked in pairs, assisting each other through every consultation. In just four hours, they were able to screen and counsel over 120 patients.
