New York, N.Y. — Dr. Henry Cohen of Woodmere, New York, was named Dean of the Touro College of Pharmacy (TCOP), Touro President Dr. Alan Kadish announced today.  Dr. Cohen, who will assume his new role on January 1, 2016 and will serve Touro in a consultant capacity until then, has had a distinguished career in pharmacy. Currently Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Long Island University Pharmacy, Chief Pharmacy Officer for the Department of Pharmacy and Director of Pharmacy Residency Programs at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, Dr. Cohen established one of the premier clinical pharmacy and residency programs in New York State. As Dean, Dr. Cohen will support the mission of the College of Pharmacy in educating and training pharmacy practitioners and pharmaceutical scientists and discovering and disseminating new knowledge in the clinical and pharmaceutical sciences. Dr. Cohen will lead and nurture faculty and staff, establish priorities for program development and lead strategic planning and assessment activities for the College of Pharmacy.

“As a clinical pharmacist and longtime advocate for the profession, I am excited by the opportunity to have a significant impact on pharmacy education and the practice field and to help students prepare for rewarding careers. My goal is to provide an educational experience that includes active learning, exemplary pharmacy practice clerkships as well as collaborative research and scholarship opportunities with faculty who are at the vanguard of science and practice,” said Dr. Cohen.

“Today’s pharmacists must possess excellent clinical and communication skills, and residency training has become the norm for all pharmacy practitioners who will be involved in direct patient care. In keeping with Touro’s mission, I look forward to building on the tradition of community service and public health and expanding ambulatory and transitions in care offerings. My vision is to enhance the collaborative opportunities for inter-professional education with Touro’s College of Medicine and to jointly grow our research and scholarship—all efforts that will help our students secure residencies and fellowships that will prepare them for the multitude of career options in pharmacy,” continued Dr. Cohen.

Dr. Cohen earned a BS in Pharmacy and MS with a specialty in Pharmacotherapeutics from the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Long Island University. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from St. John’s University College of Pharmacy. His expertise includes critical care medicine, geriatrics, neuropsychiatry, pharmacokinetics, pharmacy technology and medication safety.

“The field of pharmacy continues to grow, offering opportunities in medication therapy management, community and hospital settings, industry, pharmacogenomics and more. U.S. News & World Report’s Best 100 Jobs recently ranked pharmacist #5, with a 15-20% growth rate through 2020 and a median annual salary of $125,000. As the only College of Pharmacy in Manhattan, TCOP is poised for tremendous growth. We are very pleased to have Dr. Henry Cohen join Touro to lead our dedicated pharmacy team, train our students for the myriad careers in the field and take the school to the next level,” said Dr. Alan Kadish, Touro President.

Educating more than 6,000 students annually in the health sciences, Touro is fast becoming one of the largest healthcare educational systems in the U.S.  In 2014, a second campus for Touro’s College of Osteopathic Medicine was opened as well as new programs to train allied health professionals. Touro offers integrated honors and medical honors pathway programs that provide opportunities for high achieving students to combine undergraduate studies with professional education on a fast track. Close to 100 percent of Touro students achieve a first-time pass rate on national certification exams, especially in the health sciences fields.
